A team from the King Hussein School of Computing Sciences at Princess Sumaya University for Technology clinched first place in the “Game Development Hackathon,” organized by Tamatem Games in partnership with Al Hussein Technical University. The competition saw strong competition, with 14 teams from various Jordanian universities qualifying.
The winning team, consisting of Saleh Owiada and Hani Qaraeen, presented an innovative arcade-style single-player driving game where the player controls a car on a journey from Amman to Aqaba, collecting elements and avoiding obstacles along the way.
Prof. Wejdan Abu Elhaija, President of the University, expressed pride in the victory, highlighting how the university’s academic programs align with the evolving demands of the labor market.
She also expressed pride in the innovative ideas of the students, which reflect their creativity and ability to use technology to serve Jordanian culture. She further praised Hussam Hammo, a university graduate and CEO of Tamatem, for his achievements as the first publisher of mobile games in the Middle East and North Africa.
Dr. Firas Al-Ghanem, Dean of the King Hussein School of Computing Sciences, explained that the hackathon focused on developing a mobile game demo inspired by the popular character “Awad Abo Shefeh,” a significant figure in Jordanian culture.
Dr. Al-Ghanem added that the qualification of two teams from the university for the final competition reflects the university’s commitment to supporting student participation in competitions that drive innovation in technology and community service. This success was achieved through the collaboration of Dr. Sarah Tadmori, Head of the Department of Computer Graphics, and Dr. Manaf Gharaibeh, Head of the Department of Computer Science, to strengthen partnerships between departments.
